Hello all,

I just moved to New York after living in Paris for more than seven years. I had gotten used to attending 19th century balls, and over here I feel a little lost. I am trying to find some sort of costuming or historical reinactment society who organizes regular historical balls, costumed picnics and so on in the NYC area. Does this kind of thing already exist around here? Any help at all would be appreciated!

Mar. 5th, 2007 @ 11:32 pm Where can I buy Coats & Clark in Manhattan?

Alright, I confess. I'm a girl from the suburbs, and everything I buy to sew with comes from JoAnn's in Connecticut. :/ I'm sure I'm missing out on lots of great stuff in the shops in the Fashion District, but I really haven't had much time to sew since I moved here.

ANYWAY, I'm trying to finish up this quilt I started at my parents' house and I'm running out of thread! Where can I go in Manhattan to get another spool of Coats and Clark thread? A shop with a large selection of C&C would be ideal; I think this is not one of the basic colors.

Thank you!

I thought I'd share some of my favorite links for patterns, etc since I figure I can't be the only person that would rather tweek patterns (rather than draft from scratch) and do things on the cheap when possible....

lindaben on eBay is my all time favorite person to buy patterns from. She's very nice and if she doesn't have a particular costume pattern/size she'll try and find it for her repeat buyers!
Good prices on interesting and normally expensive fabrics here. But also keep in mind that right now the fabric shops on 39th between 7th and 8th Ave's are having sales! There's one shop in particular that is going out of business in the middle of the south side block. Sorry I don't remember the name but there is a big hand written sign in the window. Everything is pretty cheap and I'm sure you can haggle him. He still has some nice brocades and silks among other things.
And if you believe everyone should have stripey socks to go with their outfits/creations like I do go here.

I've been recruited to make my sis's wedding veil aside from other things... she wants it beaded similar to her dress. I'm not a novice sewer but I don't have much experience with beading. So the big question is what is the best way to attach small pearls, beads and sequins to tulle?? I want it to look nice, of course, and I'm wary to glue the beading on. If I do sew them on, what would be the best way to do so? I have until the end of April to do this and all other projects have been cleared away until the veil and my MOH dress is done (I'm making my own).
All suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated since there's not much available on this subject online (at least none that I could find).

Thx

Hey everyone, I am sterlingspider, the alter ego of carapax, the original creator and Mod of this community. I will likely be dissolving that LJ soon and so I have transferred moderator-ship to this username.

As most of you have probably noticed it's pretty dead around here, and that's more then a bit sad. I'd really like to get this community back up and going strong. Unfortunately as a person who doesn’t like to Spam other communities with "join my community!" posts it's pretty hard to figure out how to get people interested.

I'll try to do my part to drum up interest, but I'd like to ask that those of you with like minded friends please toss a link to this community in your own LJs. It was pretty sad to realize that there are only a bit more then 20 of us here, meanwhile there are well more then 20 crafty NY-ers on my friends list alone!

If anyone has any suggestions of how to get the word out without spamming other communities to death please do let me know.

Jun. 14th, 2004 @ 09:50 am corsetry
hello everyone,

i have had this great fabric and this corset pattern sitting in my closet for quite some time now. yet each time i think of getting started i feel this "sewers block". i cannot exactly explain it, but each time i think back to when i used to sit around with my mom and than later with friends, each sewing thier own project and helping each other out here and there.

since i live with non-sewers now i was wondering if any of you know of any sewing groups or even more particularly corsetry groups. or if any of you would be interrested in such a thing.

Cheers!

Hi, everyone. My name is Sarah. I just joined this community and I really think it might help my project out if I get enough support from everybody.

The project I am currently working on is a Fashion Magazine called "Sapphire". I will be searching for up and coming fashion designers, small fashion venues, and businesses as well as all of those underground shops and boutiques that this community seem's to have. I will be featuring their fashion and accessories and will also be featuring fresh new faces in modeling and entertainment who will be displaying most of the fashion. I am also searching for people who make their own cosmetics and beauty products. If anyone wishes to help out with any of this the fashion, modeling or cosmetics please contact me at HugeCharmedFan25@aol.com.

My crew and I originaly planned on having the first issue launched by October (would have been the November issue), but we are going to have to push it back due to little time and barely any funds. So, what we decided to do was start off with mini issues until we can get the big one launched. The first mini issue will be for July and we're allready orgonizing it.

I wanted to do this, because I am an aspiring model, fashion designer, and I love to write and I am tired of people saying I'm not good enough to do any of those things, and I wanted to find people like me who feel the same way.

This magazine will be keeping the readers updated on all the latest in fashion, beauty, health, entertainment and will also give myself as well as others a chance to express themselves through fashion. My goal is to open doors for people and to give them the exposure and publicity they need to succeed.

We are working on a low budget. We want the magazine as well as the mini issues to look professional, with the mini issues we want to make a good first impression. Since, we are working on a low budget and making these magazine's will be costly we are doing everything we can to raise the funds we need to help this project. I started up a donation asking for atleast $1.00, but you can donate as much as you want. The money we raise from it will go toward, making the magazine, high quality glossy paper, seamstress, and designer supplies, as well as other crew member supplies, that they will need to get their work done. Future travel, eventually I would like to be able to work one on one with everyone on my crew and also the photographers and models so I can know whats happening and share my opinions personally. The money will be going toward everything that goes into to this project. If you would like to show your support and donate atleast $1.00 or more to this project click on the button below and enter the amount you wish to donate. If you don't have a PayPal account, but would still like to donate email me at HugeCharmedFan25@aol.com and I will send you the address. Please be sure to check out my live journal for more info on this project. To donate click
